"Calendar Girls" is a musical with music and lyrics by Gary Barlow and a book by Tim Firth. The show is based on the 2003 film Calendar Girls, which is based on a true story. The musical received its world premiere at the Grand Theatre, Leeds in 2015, before transferring to The Lowry in January 2016. It then transferred to London's West End. Calendar Girls comes back to The Lowry as part of its brilliant UK tour.
Anna- Jayne Casey played the role of Annie. Casey was brilliant and had good vocals as she sang with such passion. Casey was able to portray Annie in a very realistic way. I loved the way that Casey had used her emotions when she sang because it showed that she was devoted to the role and wanted to give it her all.
Fern Britton played the role of Marie who is a member at the WI (Women's Institute). Britton was very good, and her character plays a key role to the plot of the musical as she rivals the whole plan.
Sara Crowe played the role of Ruth who is another member at the WI. Ruth is a comedic character and brought out the comedic side to the musical. I loved Crowe's work because it was very funny and enjoyable to watch.
Karen Dunbar played the role of Cora who is also a member at the WI and a single mother with a strict father. Dunbar had fabulous vocals and amazing acting skills. She was also a comedic character and her work was very pleasing to watch.
Denise Welch played the role of Celia who is also a member at the WI and stood out because of her physical assets. She was the only member of the WI who had 'little work done'. Welch was great, and she showed how Celia's character feels about being different and what she looked like. Welch is a very good actress and displayed a variety of skills on stage.
Ruth Madoc played the role of Jessie. Madoc is the oldest member of the WI but doesn't do 'what age expects'. I loved Jessie and she stood out for me because even though she was oldest than the rest she still wanted to help with the project. Madoc's vocals blew me away.
Rebecca Storm played the role of Chris who has been Annie's best friend for 40 years. I loved Chris so much and Storm did a brilliant job of making Chris such loveable character. Storm was incredible, her acting skills were good and her facial expressions throughout the entire performance told us how she was feeling and indicated when she had yet another brilliant idea.
Sebastian Abineri played the role of Colin who was a strong character and is incredibly important to the plot. Abineri was brilliant. He showed dedication to his character and delivered his emotions very well on stage.
I would also like to mention Richard Anthony, Isabel Caswell, Phil Corbitt, Pauline Daniels, Tyler Dobbs, Catherine Digges and Derek Elroy. Everybody's work was phenomenal, and everyone brought positive energy to the stage.
The set was designed by Robert Jones was very simple and worked well. The use of technology with the set was really good because it meant there wasn't any set changes as the set was projected which didn't make the stage look too busy or full.
