After its huge success in 2010, Oldham Theatre Workshop revived it’s teenage take on the Cinderella story. This energy infused piece of musical theatre, performed by some of the country’s most talented young actors, singers and musicians will leave you breathless and wanting more. The countdown was on… the countdown to PROM!
After seeing just a snippet of this incredible show at ‘Raise the Roof’, I had high expectations for ‘PROM! The Musical’. Needless to say these expectations were surpassed and I enjoyed every second of the magical show. A modern take on the classic Cinderella is how ‘PROM!’ is described as, but personally I believe that it has its own unique story line, causing different emotions to be felt throughout the performance. I believe that the Oldham Theatre Workshop did an incredible job of keeping clear, the difference between the magical realm where fairy godmothers practised their craft and the other realm where the school children were in their last term of school and were excited for prom. The consistency was on point as well, each time they exited the magical realm to go to the human realm they ended up in the same place with glitter all over them, I think this was a simple touch that added great effect. The lights constantly changed to fit the mood and tone of the scene, portraying how great thought went into this production. The use of comedic characters was very effective and even comedic songs had the audience laughing quite a lot, and when it came time to feel sympathy for the characters, the performers were more than able to make the audience feel what they felt. All in all, ‘PROM! The Musical’ taught us not to judge others, be willing to understand that the hatred in someone’s heat can come from their past, have faith in ourselves and trust our instincts, but also that prom was for everyone at school, and everyone should have a say in what happens at prom.
