"The Hired Man" is Queen's Theatre Hornchurch and Hull Truck Theatre production in association with Oldham Coliseum Theatre. The show is set in Cumbria, 1898 and tells the beautiful story of John and Emily, a young married couple, and their moving struggle to carve a living from the land based on the novel by Melvyn Bragg, with a breath-taking score by Howard Goodall, the award-winning composer of West End hits "Bend It Like Beckham" and "Love Story".
The cast of The Hired Man
This musical was very imaginative and took us on a journey easily. Although the storyline was great, it was a little bit confusing and hard to follow at times. It featured a lot of humour and lovable characters played by an insanely incredible cast.
The cast was extremely strong and powerful with outstanding vocals and astonishing acting done on that stage. It was very clear that the company have rehearsed unbelievably hard and performed their socks off. I was astonished by John's (played incredibly well by Oliver Hembrough) and Emily's (played beautifully by Lauryn Redding) chemistry on stage as both actors were so developed and comfortable with each other.
The stage of the Oldham Coliseum is quite small and the set was very simple, thanks to that the audience members can only focus on the acting and the storyline of the musical.
