Hanna Moisala is a Finnish tight-wire dancer. She studied Circus Arts and has worked as a circus artist for companies such as Dizzy O'Dare and Agit-Cirk, as well as touring the world as a dancer with the Finnish cult band Leningrad Cowboys. In Wiredo, she tells a mesmerising story of stepping out into the unknown with her body, a tight-wire and a physical composition that draws on the Japanese rope art of Shibari.
The setting for this performance seems very simple at first glance — a darkened stage, with two metal pillars-like construction on each side and ropes to connect them. However, the ropes are the main dish here. The ropes are in different sizes, lengths and thickness with knots tangled around the and they hang across the pillars creating a tightrope bridge.
Hanna Moisala enters the stage with yet another rope around her body and a wooden katana on her back, as she drew the weapon, the rope falls. The music starts and with it a performance, of sword fighting skills and soon after the performer is starting the main act.
We witness the calm preparation of the lines and energetic tightening of the rope around her body which form a harness on the lower and later on the upper body, and this is one of the best parts of the show - to see and hear the rope being pulled through the loops with the "woosh".
This is after all the art of Shibari - a Japanese term for artistic uses of ropes. With many breathtaking moments on the tightrope, there is not a single whisper; the only sound is the music, heavy breathing of the performer and the sounds of the rope when it stretches, falls or tightens. The music was a bit of an issue here as it was a bit too loud and it was covering the beautiful, mesmerising sounds made by ropes and Hanna.
The whole performance was energetic, dynamic, breathtaking and exhilarating. It was something different than most shows and a spectacular one. If I have the chance to see it again or any other performance by Hanna Moisala, I will definitely go and see it!
